This illustration of a tree wrapped in barbed wire was drawn as a protest against a former lecturer. During the run up to my final year degree show , a friend of mine, then in his 2nd year, told me that when he presented his traditional paintings of tree to the course leader and head of the fine art department for a course critque., he was told by course leader had told his work was unoriginal and not to dare paint a tree in this third year. Due to this I draw this tree and exhibited in my final degree show along with 3 very large abstract pieces. If fair to say it didnt fit in and I gave it the expletive title just to underline my mesage. Ironicly when my show was finished I later discovered that the head of the department had ear marked this piece as one they wish to keep on display at the university and with the intention of purcasing the piece from me, thus claritfing the hippocraohy and
overall artist ignorance of the gentlemen (and associates
) in question. I soon reclaimed my work before they could re exhibit it and it now sits proudly in my mums living room, (without the title). The title is also a reference to a song with similar sentiments by Damien Rice.
